Assessing Economic Health

PEFA, World Bank

PEFA, a branch of the World Bank, provides a framework for developing nations to assess their economic health and identify areas for improvement. Since 2005, PEFA’s assessments have gone through extensive revisions, translations, and been implemented in over 75 countries, resulting in nearly 600 total assessments as of 2018. PEFA’s web presence needed to evolve to accommodate the ever-growing assessment dataset and resources for implementation: to make it more accessible to a broader audience; to make the datasets easier to search and capture; and to build a platform for more outreach on PEFA’s behalf. Schema worked with the PEFA team to understand its current content and challenges, and designed a comprehensive solution for a more streamlined web experience, a unique brand update, and a visual expression of their assessment data.

Process

Beginning with an extensive content audit and stakeholder interviews, Schema built an understanding of how the site was currently used, the desired capabilities, and body of content available on the site. From there, Schema’s team presented several rounds of design solutions, starting with an updated information architecture for more streamlined site navigation, wireframes outlining where content on the site would live on each page, and eventually a fully polished design. A key point in the site redesign was finding a solution to succinctly visualize the assessment data, and recognizing the unique opportunity, this visualization was integrated into an updated logo for PEFA as well. At each step in this process feedback was invited and integrated into the next.
