Design, Data, and Discovery at TEDx

Last Thursday, Schema founder Christian Marc Schmidt presented a talk on the power and potential of data visualization at TEDx San Francisco’s annual “Dare to Know” event.

Mapping Media Attention Span

Last year, Schema partnered with Axios, Alberto Cairo, and Google News Initiative to create The Lifespan of News Stories, a project that analyzes the shape of search interest data from the top news stories of 2018. The visualization explores search interest across the United States around various news events, curated by Axios. The stories are aggregated by category, including Politics & Elections, Natural Catastrophes, Environment & Science, Social Issues, Violence & War, and Obituaries. The form and size of the search interest plots depict how public interest unfolds over time.

Schema collaborated with Knoll to create The Archive, an interactive archive to commemorate their 80th anniversary. The Archive incorporates events, products, and designers from Knoll’s founding years through to the present day.

New Work: European Court of Human Rights Database

Schema partnered with the Department of Political Science at the University of Washington to create the European Court of Human Rights Database (ECHRdb) — an innovative application visualizing the cases of the European Court of Human Rights, and enables broad access to the data by scholars, practitioners, and the general public. The tool is based on a static dataset spanning the years 1960–2014. It includes over 15,000 judgments, 91.9% of which were violations, and 1,233 amicus briefs.

New Work: Searching for Health

Schema collaborated with Google News Lab and Alberto Cairo to create “Searching for Health”, a visualization that tracks the top searches for common health issues in the United States, from Cancer to Diabetes, and compares them with the actual location of occurrences for those same health conditions.

Schema at Collision Conference

Last year we unveiled the public pre-release of Arrays at the Collision Conference, known as “America’s fastest growing tech conference”. Since then, we have launched our private beta, exhibited at the Web and Dublin Tech summits, and have continued to build a valuable platform with unique visualizations and data sharing capabilities. This year we went back to New Orleans to open Arrays up to the public.
